Allegations Emerge That Health Data of Half a Million UK Citizens Was Offered for Sale in China

Concerns over the security of medical data in the United Kingdom have intensified following new allegations involving the UK Biobank database. According to reports published in the British media, health data relating to approximately 500,000 individuals was allegedly offered for sale on Chinese online platforms.

Reports by The Times, BBC News, and various technology publications claim that the controversy emerged after researchers based in China were allegedly found attempting to share UK Biobank data through the Alibaba online platform.

UK Biobank is one of the largest medical research projects in the UK, containing voluntarily submitted health, DNA, and biological data from millions of participants. The database is widely used in scientific research involving cancer, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, cardiovascular conditions, and other major illnesses.

Authorities stated that the data allegedly offered for sale did not include direct identifiers such as names or addresses. However, privacy experts warned that information including age, gender, medical history, lifestyle details, and biological data could still create a serious risk of re-identification when combined.

Data protection specialists in the UK stressed that the issue raises not only cybersecurity concerns, but also major legal and ethical questions surrounding patient confidentiality and personal data protection laws.

Opposition politicians and human rights campaigners have called for a renewed review into whether NHS-linked health data is being adequately protected. Some experts also urged stricter oversight regarding the sharing of medical data with artificial intelligence companies and overseas research institutions.

Following the allegations, UK Biobank confirmed that an internal investigation had been launched. It was also reported that access for certain research institutions believed to be connected to the incident had been suspended pending further inquiries.

Under UK GDPR and data protection legislation, health information is classified as “special category personal data” and is subject to the highest levels of legal protection.
