Student Visas
What is a UK Student Visa?
The UK Student Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 Visa) allows international students aged 16 and over to study at approved UK educational institutions. This visa is essential for those who wish to pursue higher education, college, or certain eligible courses in the UK.
Studying in the UK not only provides world-class education but also offers opportunities to work part-time, experience British culture, and build a future career.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible for a Student Visa if:
- You have an offer of study from an approved UK institution (a licensed student sponsor).
- You can prove your English language ability (usually CEFR level B2 for higher education).
- You have enough funds to cover your course fees and living expenses.
- You are 16 or over (with parental consent if under 18).
Requirements
To apply, you must show:
- A valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued by your sponsoring institution.
- Evidence of financial support (bank statements or sponsorship).
- English language test results, such as IELTS for UKVI (if required).
- Proof of parental consent (if under 18).
How Long Can You Stay?
- The visa length depends on the course duration plus some additional time before and after.
- Students on longer courses may stay in the UK for several years.
- You may be able to switch to a Graduate Visa after completing your course to stay and work in the UK.
Work Rights on a Student Visa
- Most students can work up to 20 hours per week during term-time.
- Full-time work is allowed during holidays.
- Some courses (such as foundation or below-degree level) may have stricter work limits.
Bringing Family Members
- Postgraduate students on courses lasting 9 months or longer can usually bring dependants (partner and children).
- Each dependant must meet financial requirements.
Graduate Visa Route
After completing an eligible course, you may apply for a Graduate Visa, which allows you to remain in the UK for at least 2 years to work or look for work (3 years for PhD graduates).
