The UK Expansion Worker Visa is part of the Global Business Mobility (GBM) route and is designed for senior employees or specialist workers of an overseas business that is planning to expand into the UK. This visa allows businesses that do not yet have a trading presence in the UK to send key staff members to establish and grow their operations.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible for a UK Expansion Worker Visa if:
- You work for a business that is linked to a UK branch or subsidiary.
- You are being assigned to the UK to set up a new branch.
- You have a certificate of sponsorship from your employer.
- You meet the minimum salary and skill requirements set by the Home Office.
Requirements
Applicants must typically demonstrate:
- Employment with the overseas business for at least 12 months (unless exempt).
- A valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
- A job that is on the list of eligible occupations.
- Minimum salary threshold, usually £45,800 per year (or £23,040 in some eligible roles).
- Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself in the UK.
How Long Can You Stay?
- The visa is usually granted for up to 1 year initially, with the possibility of extension.
- The maximum time you can stay on this route is 2 years.
- This visa does not directly lead to settlement, but it can be a pathway to other UK work visas.
Family Members
Your spouse/partner and children under 18 can usually apply to join you as your dependants. They will need to show proof of financial support.
