The full implementation of Awaab’s Law—a vital housing reform named after two-year-old Awaab Ishak who died from prolonged exposure to mould—has been postponed until 2027, sparking criticism from housing advocates and public health experts.

Initially introduced to enforce timely responses to dangerous conditions in social housing, Awaab’s Law mandates stricter standards for landlords and councils. However, housing charity Shelter has warned that the delay is putting thousands of lives at risk by allowing substandard conditions to persist.

The government has not provided a clear reason for the delay, but housing sector insiders suggest logistical and funding issues may be at play.

Experts stress that tenants must stay informed about their legal protections and report unsafe living conditions to local authorities immediately.
