Британская компания оштрафована на сотни тысяч фунтов после того, как рабочий потерял ногу

Workplace safety violations and employer liability cases have once again come under the spotlight in the United Kingdom following a serious industrial accident on the Isle of Wight. After an investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a company was fined hundreds of thousands of pounds following an incident in which a worker lost his leg.
According to reports published by BBC News and the HSE, the incident occurred at Medina Joinery Ltd. A 46-year-old employee, Paul Martin, suffered severe injuries after heavy metal sheets fell on top of him. Following the accident, he was taken to hospital where doctors were forced to amputate his leg below the knee.
During the investigation, the HSE concluded that the company had breached workplace health and safety regulations. The report stated that the heavy metal sheets had not been stored safely, employees had not received adequate training, and proper risk assessments had not been carried out.
The court ordered Medina Joinery Ltd to pay a £200,000 fine in addition to legal costs. HSE inspectors stressed that the accident had been entirely preventable.
It was also reported that Paul Martin underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process following the accident and that his working life had been severely affected. In addition to the physical loss, he stated that he had experienced significant psychological trauma.
Under the UK Health and Safety at Work Act, employers are legally required to ensure the safety of their employees. Companies that fail to implement proper safety measures can face both criminal penalties and substantial compensation claims.
Legal experts note that workplace accidents in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing have increased in recent years. They emphasise that strict compliance with safety procedures is essential, particularly in environments involving heavy equipment and industrial materials.
Under UK law, victims of workplace accidents may be entitled to claim compensation for loss of earnings, rehabilitation expenses, psychological injuries, and long-term care needs.
