Drink driving continues to impact lives across the UK. According to recent government data, between 290 and 320 people lost their lives in 2022 in collisions involving drivers over the alcohol limit. This marks the highest fatality rate since 2009, showing an increase compared to the previous year.
Drink-driving incidents account for 17% of all road deaths, indicating a notable rise in accidents involving intoxicated drivers. This figure has reached its highest level in 15 years.
Drink Driving Statistics and Road Safety
In 2022, an estimated 6,800 individuals were killed or injured in accidents where at least one driver was over the drink-drive limit. This is a 1% increase from 6,740 in 2021, marking the third-lowest rate since 1979. Over the past decade, the proportion of road casualties related to drink driving, including fatalities and serious injuries, has steadily increased.
Rod Dennis, RAC road safety spokesperson, described this increase in drink-driving fatalities as “abhorrent,” urging the government to develop an actionable plan alongside experts to reduce these figures.
